Perhaps best known by his book titles, Gary Thomas is the bestselling author of Sacred Marriage, The Sacred Search, and others. Thomas’ sixteen books have been translated into more than a dozen languages and won numerous awards. Gary Thomas will be in Toronto on April 16 for a full-day marriage conference and April 17 for an event just for singles. Both events are being hosted by Church on the Queensway.
The Christian Herald sat down with Gary Thomas to talk about his upcoming singles event coming to Toronto. Thomas says he doesn’t like to see kids younger than high school at the events because mature topics are talked about – sensitively. The singles event is meant for anyone who is single and hasn’t had a serious relationship to those who are dating or single again.
“Christians are getting married for the same reasons as non-Christians, and it’s not working,” says Thomas.
Marriage, as set out in the Bible, should look different than society’s model, but Christians approach marriage like those outside the Church and Thomas points out that divorce rates for Christians are about the same as non-Christians. If a Christian marriage should look different, then choosing a spouse must be approached differently.
“They think it’s going to be different with them,” said Thomas of those choosing a spouse. It’s impossible for anyone to enthrall or captivate a spouse for fifty or sixty years, Thomas laughed. No one is that interesting. Infatuation fades. Those things you refused to see when dating don’t disappear after the wedding. Bodies change. Spouses get sick. There has to be more to the decision.
In his book The Sacred Search, Thomas writes it’s not about who you marry, but why. “Why do you want to get married? That’s what you need to ask before you decide who to marry.”
And for those considering choosing a spouse again, Thomas says, “When people make a poor decision the first time — if they don’t figure out why, they tend to make the same choice again.”
In Sacred Marriage Thomas asked readers: What if marriage is designed to make us holy more than to make us happy? Building on that idea, Thomas’ 14 city Canadian tour is built around his newest book A Lifelong Love which asks readers: What if marriage is more than just staying together?
Church on the Queensway is hosting an eight hour marriage conference for couples on April 16th. The marriage conference, along with feature speaker Gary Thomas, also includes Sheila Wray Gregoire, author of the popular Canadian blog To Love, Honor and Vaccuum. She’s toured across Canada and the USA speaking at marriage events about her books A Good Girls Guide To Sex and 9 Thoughts To Change Your Marriage. Audiences will also enjoy laughs with pastor and comedian Steve Geyer.
Compassionate and honest, Thomas will walk couples through a variety of obstacles (in their thinking and actions) that cause marital strife and turmoil. Marriage is not easy, but it can be repaired. A good marriage is not something that happens, it’s something you build intentionally through a lot of hard work, communication, and perseverance.
Would you stand by your spouse if they suddenly fell ill and required round the clock medical attention? Would your faith survive that difficult situation? Gary Thomas asks couples to nurture, protect, and stretch their relationships so that when hard times come (and they will to each couple in a variety of ways) your faith and your marriage will survive and even grow.
“Gary Thomas talks are like the T-Bone Steaks of marriage events, full of spiritual protein and definitely a full meal,” says event organizer Eric Spath. “We’ve had a really great response to these events and couples are being challenged to grow in their relationships in a way they’ve never been before at one of our events.”
Tickets for the singles event are $12 each. The marriage conference tickets are $25 in advance until March 2nd and $30 each after that. Tickets are available at the door for $35 per person .
